Surrey Sands, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity was established in 1983 as a local group within the nationwide Sands registered charity, working to the aims and objectives set out by UK Sands.
As a local branch of the national charity, we:
Cover seven hospitals across Surrey
Epsom General Hospital, St Helier, St Peter’s Hospital, Croydon University Hospital, East Surrey, Kingston Hospital and Royal Surrey.
Are entirely self funded
Surrey Sands receive no form of statutory funding. We are very grateful for donations that allow us to provide support to local families
We support bereaved parents
Bereavement support is at the core of everything we do. Some of the services that we offer include Telephone support (helpline), Befrienders, Group support and much more – read our support page for further information.
We raise awareness
16 babies every day just before, during or soon after birth. Many of these deaths are preventable.
We train healthcare professionals
We try to ensure that bereaved parents and families receive the best possible care. We provide training and talks for health professionals based on the Sands Guidelines which give practical guidance on how to meet parents’ needs and provide good bereavement care.
The management committee and befrienders all offer their services on a voluntary basis. Nearly all of us are also bereaved parents.
